Seasalt Lewes & New Other Works

NEW DOORSTEP PANEL FOR SEASALT, LEWES

Today saw the opening of the new Seasalt shop in Lewes, East Sussex.

Last Saturday we installed the entrance floor panel and three step risers which compliment the amazing interior to this shop, from bespoke oak flooring, furniture and lighting art to the skilled hand-lettering of Carl Smith, and that's before you start looking at the fabulous clothes!

ELSEWHERE!!

I've also just installed the first of three panels for Stonewater Homes on a new housing development site in Uckfield, East Sussex.

Here are some photos of the finished panel for the first site; Stoneway Court.

WHAT'S GOING ON?

This is what's going on!
The latest projects underway in the Budd Studio

DARTMOUTH SEASALT PANEL

Completed last month and a great trip with my good buddy Johnny to install this work on a most blusterous day in that great Devon town.  Stayed at the fabulous Bayard's Cove Inn after completing the installation.

HAYWARDS HEATH TWINNING ASSOCIATION PANEL

The completed design for the twinning panel due for 2016.  It is proposed that it will be a multi-media work, terracotta border panels, mosaic central image and bronze medallions top right and left.  The work represents Hayward Heath's twinning towns of Traunstein in Germany and Bondues in France.  It also celebrates the 175th anniversary of the town's railway.

PEBBLE MOSAIC - PRIVATE CLIENT

Based upon a green man mosaic by Jean Cocteau this work has been made within an aluminium tray so although it's heavy it is portable!  It will be installed onto a wall in my clients' garden in Cornwall.

HOUSING DEVELOPMENT PLACE NAME SIGNS

These three designs are currently being fabricated in the studio and will be place names for new housing developments in Uckfield and Mayfield.  Stoneway Court is almost completed, I'll upload some photos of it on the bench later next week.

SEASALT ENTRANCE PANEL - LEWES

A new colour-way for Seasalt for their Lewes shop due to open for Christmas.

ACER PANELS COMPLETED

SECOND MOSAIC REVEALED

For some reason this second panel took an extra day to make, a bit more complicated maybe?

Anyway I thought you might like to see them together.  I'll install it as soon as I get a rain-free day.

FIRST ACER PANEL INSTALLED

Following the completion of the first panel on the bench I made a simple mould and cast in the backing with fine aggregate and cement then weighed it down for a couple of days to ensure the face of the mosaic would be perfectly flat.

After two more days the panel is taken out of the mould, flipped over and cleaned (below photo)

The steps have already been laid with a void ready for each panel.  Photo below shows first panel installed, pointing still needing to be done (interesting how the colours look so different from those taken under the studio lights to those in natural light)

This photo below shows the first installed panel looking down the steps.

GARDEN PANEL - ACER TREES

TWO SMALL COMMISSIONS FOR A GARDEN

I have just begun working on two small panels (500 x 500mm) for some garden steps where an Acer tree used to stand, a sort of tree tribute!

Stage One:  Working in reverse this is the amount completed after the first day's work.

Stage Two:  At the end of day three the whole area of panel one is completed ready for casting on the bench.  In this second photo you can see the amount of debris, I purposely did no clearing up during the making to see how much glass was on the bench, very little will be wasted though, it all gets recycled!

Stage Three:   All ready for casting, I'll show that process in a couple of days time.

WEST BOROUGH PRIMARY SCHOOL MOSAIC COMPLETED

Tuesday saw the installation of my final school project for this summer.

West Borough Primary School in Maidstone, Kent have created a "100 years Centenary Tree" to acknowledge the history of the school and major world events and popular motifs from each decade.

The tree was made in separate panels and brought together for installation.

No guessing what time of day this was completed!!

HUGE SCHOOL MOSAIC COMPLETED

Our blog from a few weeks ago featured a mosaic i was making with the pupils of Buckingham Park School in Shoreham-by-Sea, near Brighton.

Today I completed the installation with the help of the school's caretakers (thank you guys!) as the upper panels were a bit heavy!

Total size of work 8m2 (4 X 2) and a beautiful polished oak frame made by Nick Holt of the Sussex Bookcase Company (01580) 830841.

AS YOU TURN A CORNER FROM RECEPTION THIS IS WHAT YOU SEE....

The mosaic depicts lots of local things, the shoreham house boats, the airport, war memorial, lighthouse, the school, bridge, church Etc.  The work was made over a four-day workshop.

Motcombe Community Infants School - Eastbourne

Work on the Year 6 leavers butterfly and flying leaves has been completed
and looks really excellent.

This will, it is hoped, become an annual event for leavers to create their own butterfly with the class names on each wing and appropriate date on the body.  Every year we'll make a few more leaves, maybe a few flying flowers and insects, until in the distant future the wall becomes covered with insects and flora!

CHILDREN START HUGE MOSAIC AT BUCKINGHAM PARK SCHOOL

BUCKINGHAM PARK SCHOOL - SHOREHAM-BY-SEA - SUSSEX

Children at Buckingham Park school have just begun a huge mosaic project for a wall area in the new-build area of the school.

Working with me over a few days the whole school will participate in the creation of this 8m2 mosaic which depicts aspects of Shoreham-by-Sea, near Brighton in Sussex.

The design was created using the best drawings resulting from a competition for which the children were asked to depict their town, school and environs.

From left to right: War Memorial, Airport, School (Enhanced but now very Groovy!) House boats, Church, Lancing College, RNLI Lifeboat, Old Biplane, Houseboat, Old Lighthouse.

The mosaic work started on Monday and by the end of just the first day we had the top right-hand quarter completed (elements below)

I'm in "Schools" season at the moment so expect updates on this mosaic as well as two others in Eastbourne and Maidstone over the next two weeks.
